Carriage Drive church of Christ, Beckley, West Virginia
The Carriage Drive church of Christ is comprised of a group of Christians who desire no other name than that worn by early disciples (Acts 11:26). The name Christian magnifies the Savior who died for the sins of the world. Our goal is to please God. To accomplish that goal we follow the Bible, and allow for no other source of authority. In this way, we are confident that our service is pleasing to God (Matthew 15:8f).
For this reason, you will find our services a little different than many of the churches around. The first thing you might notice is a lack of instrumental music. We sing a cappella by choice, although some have thought it to be a lack of finances for instrument purchases. The scriptures teach that the church is to sing and make melody in the heart (Eph 5:19). You will also notice a lack of begging for money. The church in the New Testament was funded by the contributions of her members on the first day of the week (cf. I Corinthians 16:1f). Not only do we abstain from begging during our services, you'll also find that we do not solicit the public through bake sales, bazaars, car washes, etc... Our services are also different because there are no efforts to entertain. It is not our aim to compete with Television or movie theaters. We gather to worship God. We don't make our visitors stand up for an introduction, or engage in antics that embarrass or humiliate.
Making merchandise of God's word is not a new problem. There were some who were peddling the word of God in the first century (II Cor 2:17). You'll find a great deal of this going on today. So many churches today are focused on the social desires of the community. At times these may be admirable efforts; but not authorized for the church's activities. The word of God is His power unto salvation (Rom 1:16). Faith comes by hearing the word of God (Rom 10:17). Since this is so, you will not find us luring people with "big business" religion. We yearn for the pure word of God, and strive to uphold it in our lives, and in our worship.
We are not new in the Beckley area. The church was first planted here in 1939; first meeting on West Neville Street, and then it's present location on Carriage Drive. At times, people confuse us with the Mormon Church. But they are called "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints," and you won't find that in the Bible. We are the church of Christ (Rom 16:16), and there is a big difference. Primarily because we accept no other divine revelation than God's word, the Bible. The Mormons accept three other books, and hold them as being higher than the Bible.
We have no closed services at Carriage Drive. All of our worship services and Bible studies are open to any who wish to attend. You will find a warm welcome at any of the regular services listed on the Schedule Page, or at any of our Upcoming Events. If you really want to go to heaven, let's come together and seek the will of God. We aren't perfect, but we are doing our best to do what the first century disciples did, so we can be what they were, and go where they went when they left this life.
